Universal Studios Orlando

Family FAQ & Quick Guide

The Universal Studios Orlando questions we hear most often from families, plus what we have learned from experiencing Universal Studios Orlando ourselves.

Why take our advice?

We are Ana and Travis, and Universal Studios Orlando became a big part of our everyday life while we lived in Florida from November 2024 through August 2025.

During that time, we had Universal Studios Orlando Annual Passes and experienced Universal Studios Orlando in a way that goes beyond a single vacation. We visited all four Universal Studios Orlando parks and stayed at multiple Universal Studios Orlando Resort hotels.

Universal Studios Orlando parks we have personally experienced:
  • Universal Studios Florida
  • Universal Islands of Adventure
  • Universal Volcano Bay
  • Universal Epic Universe

Universal resorts we have personally stayed at:

  • Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort
  • Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
  • Universal Aventura Hotel
  • Universal Terra Luna Resort
  • Universal Endless Summer Resort – Dockside Inn and Suites
  • Universal Endless Summer Resort – Surfside Inn and Suites

Universal Studios Orlando planning is not one size fits all. The right choices depend on your family, your priorities, your budget, your children’s ages, your travel style and how much you want to fit into your vacation.

What do you want to know? 🎢

🎢 Is Universal Studios Orlando basically a smaller Walt Disney World?

Not really.

Universal Studios Orlando has a very different feel and vacation rhythm from Walt Disney World.

Universal has four parks, but the overall vacation experience can feel more compact than Disney World, with a strong emphasis on thrill rides, Harry Potter, movie and television franchises and attractions that can appeal especially to older children, teens and adults.

That does not mean Universal is only for older kids. Families with younger children can have a wonderful trip too, but the right parks, hotel and attraction strategy matter.

Our tip: Do not plan Universal like a smaller Disney World. Plan it around what your family actually wants to experience and it usually deserves more than visiting for one day.
🎢 What parks are at Universal Studios Orlando?

Universal Studios Orlando currently includes four major theme and water parks:

  • Universal Studios Florida – movie and television themed attractions, shows and rides.
  • Universal Islands of Adventure – including The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade.
  • Universal Volcano Bay – Universal’s tropical themed water park.
  • Universal Epic Universe – Universal’s newest theme park, featuring several highly immersive lands.

You do not necessarily need a separate day for every park. Your family’s ages, interests, trip length and ticket type all matter.

🏨 Which Universal Studios Orlando hotel is right for our family?

There is not one Universal hotel that is right for every family. We have personally stayed at six Universal Studios Orlando Resort hotels, so we can help you compare them based on what matters to your trip.

  • Universal Endless Summer Resort – Surfside Inn and Suites & Dockside Inn and Suites: More budget-conscious options that still provide the experience of staying at a Universal resort.
  • Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort: A fun, resort-style option with family-friendly room configurations, pools and amenities.
  • Universal Aventura Hotel: A modern, streamlined option with convenient transportation and access to the Universal resort area.
  • Loews Sapphire Falls Resort: A full-service resort with a relaxed atmosphere, beautiful pool area and water taxi transportation.
  • Premier Universal hotels: Eligible guests staying at Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Royal Pacific Resort or Loews Portofino Bay Hotel can receive Universal Express Unlimited for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
Our tip: Do not choose your Universal hotel based only on the room price. We can compare the room, transportation, location, amenities, included benefits and your family’s vacation goals together.
🏨 What are the different Universal hotel categories?

Universal Studios Orlando has several resort levels, and the differences can be about much more than the room itself.

Value and value-plus resorts can be a good fit when keeping the hotel portion of the trip more budget-conscious is important. Other resorts can add more amenities, resort atmosphere and transportation options.

Premier hotels can provide additional benefits that may change the overall value of the vacation, including complimentary Universal Express Unlimited at eligible resorts.

Our tip: We look at the complete picture rather than simply choosing the least expensive or most expensive room.
⚡ Which Universal hotels include Universal Express Unlimited?

Eligible guests staying at select Universal premier hotels can receive complimentary Universal Express Unlimited for Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure.

The eligible premier resorts include:

  • Hard Rock Hotel
  • Loews Royal Pacific Resort
  • Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

This benefit can be valuable enough to change which hotel makes sense for your family, especially if you were already considering purchasing Express separately.

Important: Complimentary Universal Express Unlimited through these hotels does not apply to Epic Universe or Volcano Bay.
🪄 Should we consider a Wizarding World of Harry Potter Vacation Package?

If you are staying at least 3 nights and purchasing Park-to-Park tickets for at least 2 days, it is worth asking us to compare a Wizarding World of Harry Potter Vacation Package with other ways of booking your trip.

Pros

  • Can bundle important pieces of the Universal vacation together.
  • May make sense for a multi-night, multi-day Universal trip.
  • Can be appealing when Harry Potter is a major reason for the trip.
  • May simplify the planning and booking process.

Cons

  • It is not automatically the lowest-cost option.
  • You may pay for inclusions your family does not really need.
  • Your travel dates, hotel choice and ticket needs can change the value.
  • It may not make sense if Harry Potter is only a small part of your trip.
Our tip: If you are staying 3 or more nights and planning to purchase Park-to-Park tickets for 2 or more days, tell us you are interested in Harry Potter. We can compare the package against other options before you decide.
🎟️ Should we buy Park-to-Park tickets?

Park-to-Park tickets allow you to visit more than one eligible Universal theme park on the same day. Whether they make sense depends on how you want to spend your park days.

Pros

  • Lets you move between eligible parks on the same day.
  • Gives you more flexibility if you want to visit Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure in one day.
  • Required if you want to ride the Hogwarts Express between the two parks.
  • Can be particularly useful on shorter trips when you want more flexibility.

Cons

  • Costs more than a one-park-per-day ticket.
  • May not be necessary if your family prefers spending a full day in one park.
  • Park hopping can mean additional walking and transportation time.
  • Having the flexibility does not mean you have to use it.

Planning to ride the Hogwarts Express? You will need Park-to-Park admission because the Hogwarts Express connects King’s Cross in Universal Studios Florida with Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure.

Our tip: If Hogwarts Express is on your must-do list, plan on Park-to-Park tickets. Otherwise, we can help you determine whether the extra flexibility is worth adding to your trip.
🌌 Do we need a separate day for Epic Universe?

In our opinion, YES! Epic Universe deserves serious consideration when building your itinerary.

The park is large and immersive, and several of its lands can take significant time to explore. Trying to squeeze everything into a few hours may leave your family feeling rushed.

Whether you need a full day or two depends on your priorities, ages, interests and how many total days you have available.

Our tip: We can help you decide how to divide your park days rather than automatically giving every park only one full day.
🛒 Do we need a stroller at Universal?

If you are traveling with younger children, we recommend seriously considering one.

Universal park days can involve a lot of walking and standing. A child who normally walks everywhere at home may be very happy to have a stroller during a long park day.

Older children may also benefit from a stroller if they tire easily or if you are planning especially long park days.

Our tip: Do not automatically assume your child is too old for a stroller. Think about how much walking your family will actually be doing.
📏 What if our children are too short for some rides?

Height requirements can significantly affect how families should plan Universal Studios Orlando.

Before building your itinerary around specific attractions, we recommend checking the current height requirements for the rides your family is most excited about.

Universal also has child swap options that can help families with younger children when some members of the family want to ride attractions that younger guests cannot.

Our tip: Tell us your children’s ages and heights when we plan your trip. That can help us build a more realistic attraction strategy.
⚡ Should we buy Universal Express?

It depends on your dates, park plans, budget and priorities.

Universal Express can reduce the amount of time you spend waiting in eligible attraction lines, which can be especially valuable when your family wants to experience a lot in a limited amount of time.

However, it is an additional expense and does not automatically make sense for every trip.

Your hotel choice can also change the calculation because eligible premier hotel guests receive Universal Express Unlimited for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

Our tip: We can compare the cost of adding Express to your tickets with the cost difference of staying at an eligible premier hotel.
👑 Should we consider a Universal VIP Tour?

A VIP Tour can be worth considering when maximizing your time and having a more guided experience are major priorities.

VIP experiences can provide additional access, guidance and convenience, but they also come at a significant additional cost.

We would look at your group size, travel dates, must-do attractions and overall vacation goals before deciding whether a VIP Tour belongs in your plans.

Our tip: If you are considering VIP, tell us early. We can build the itinerary around the experience rather than adding it at the last minute.
🚌 How do we get around Universal Studios Orlando?

One of the advantages of Universal Orlando is that transportation can be relatively easy, especially when you stay at a Universal resort.

🚌 Buses

Universal provides bus transportation between many resorts, parks and destinations.

🚤 Water Taxis

Water taxis serve select Universal hotels and provide transportation toward Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. (It is our favorite type of transportation at Universal!)

🚶 Walking

Several Universal resorts are within walking distance of the parks and Universal CityWalk.

Our tip: Transportation should be part of your hotel decision. A resort that looks perfect on paper may not be the best fit for how your family wants to spend its time.
🍽️ Do we need to plan Universal dining?

We recommend having a general dining strategy, especially if your family has specific restaurants or dining experiences you really want to experience.

You do not necessarily need to schedule every meal. Some families prefer flexibility while others enjoy knowing exactly where they will eat.

If anyone in your family has dietary restrictions or specific food needs, tell us during the planning process so we can help you identify appropriate options.

Our tip: We can help you decide what is worth planning ahead and where you can leave room for spontaneity.
😴 Do we really need a rest day at Universal?

Yes, but it depends on the length and pace of your vacation.

A Universal vacation can involve a surprising amount of walking, standing and sensory stimulation.

A rest day can be especially helpful for families combining Universal with Walt Disney World or a cruise.

A rest day does not have to mean sitting in your hotel room. It could be a resort day, Volcano Bay, a pool day, shopping, a nice meal or simply a slower morning.

🏰🎢 Can we combine Universal Studios Orlando with Walt Disney World?

Absolutely.

Many families combine the two, but the order and number of days can make a significant difference in how the vacation feels.

We can help you look at hotel locations, transportation, park days, rest days and ticket needs across both destinations instead of planning each one separately.

Our tip: If you are combining Universal and Disney, tell us that from the beginning. We can build the entire trip as one itinerary.
🚢 Can we add a cruise before or after Universal?

Yes.

Orlando can be a great starting or ending point for a Florida cruise.

We highly recommend considering your transportation, hotel nights and flight timing together rather than booking the cruise and theme park portions separately.

For a cruise, we also strongly recommend arriving in the departure area at least the day before sailing whenever possible.

Our tip: If Universal is only one part of a larger vacation, let us know everything you want to include before we start planning.
🛡️ Should we add travel protection?

We strongly recommend considering travel protection for a Universal Orlando vacation, especially when you are paying for hotels, tickets, flights and other prepaid arrangements.

Travel protection can provide different types of coverage depending on the plan, including certain covered trip cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical situations and other unexpected events.

Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend reviewing the actual policy before purchasing.

Our tip: Travel protection should be considered before you need it, not after something goes wrong.
🎖️ Are there military options at Universal Studios Orlando?

Definitely check before you book.

Eligible military members and their families may have access to special Universal Studios Orlando ticket offers, vacation packages or other military benefits depending on the current offer, eligibility requirements and travel dates.

Travis is a Navy veteran, so military travel is something we are familiar with navigating.

If you are a military family, tell us before you purchase tickets. We can help you compare current military options with other available Universal offers.

Military offers can have specific eligibility requirements, purchase rules, blackout dates, ticket limits and other restrictions. Current terms should always be verified before booking.

Our tip: Do not assume a military offer is automatically the right choice. Let us compare the available options for your specific trip.
💵 Is Universal Studios Orlando expensive?

Universal Orlando can absolutely be expensive.

The total cost depends heavily on how you build the vacation.

Think about:

  • Hotel
  • Tickets
  • Park-to-Park admission
  • Universal Express
  • VIP experiences
  • Dining
  • Transportation
  • Flights or rental car
  • Travel protection
  • Souvenirs
  • Special experiences

Sometimes spending more on the hotel can make the trip easier. Sometimes spending less on the hotel gives you more money for experiences.

Our tip: Look at the total vacation cost rather than comparing one line item at a time.
📅 When should I start planning Universal Studios Orlando?

You can plan Universal Studios Orlando closer to travel than some vacations, but starting earlier can give you more choices.

This is especially true if you have specific hotel preferences, travel dates, room types, special experiences, military benefits, a larger family or a group.

Starting earlier also gives us more opportunity to compare the entire vacation rather than simply trying to find whatever remains.

Our tip: You do not have to know everything before reaching out. Part of our job is helping you figure out what matters first.
❤️ What is your biggest Universal Studios Orlando planning advice?

Do not try to make your Universal vacation look like someone else’s.

Your family’s ages, interests, walking tolerance, must-do attractions, hotel preferences, travel dates and budget all affect what makes sense.

You do not need every upgrade, every park or every extra experience to have a meaningful Universal vacation.

We would rather help you spend your time and money intentionally than give you a generic checklist and send you on your way.

And remember: You are not there to conquer Universal Studios Orlando. You are there to experience it together.
