Family FAQ & Quick Guide
The Universal Studios Hollywood questions we hear most often, plus what we have learned from experiencing the park ourselves with our family.
Why take our advice?
We are Ana and Travis, and Universal Studios has been part of our family’s travel experiences for years. We have visited Universal Studios Hollywood throughout the years, including holiday-season visits with our girls when they were babies and toddlers.
We have also experienced the park from a family’s perspective, not just as travel professionals. We understand that a theme park day looks very different when you are traveling with babies, toddlers, school-age children, teens, grandparents, or a group with different interests.
We have also flown into Burbank, driven from Las Vegas, and experienced different ways of building a Southern California theme park trip.
- Visiting with our children at different ages
- Holiday-season visits
- Experiencing the park with babies and toddlers
- Planning around young children
- Comparing hotels and transportation
- Flying into Burbank
- Driving from Las Vegas
- Helping clients plan their visits
Universal Studios Hollywood planning is not one size fits all. Your family’s ages, priorities, walking tolerance, travel dates, hotel preferences, and budget all affect what makes sense.
What do you want to know? 🎢
🎢 Is Universal Studios Hollywood good for families with young children?
Yes. Universal Studios Hollywood can be enjoyable for families with babies, toddlers, school-age children, teens, and adults. The key is choosing attractions and pacing that fit your family instead of trying to experience everything.
Some attractions have height requirements, and younger children may enjoy character encounters, shows, family attractions, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, and the Studio Tour more than some of the larger thrill rides.
🏰 How is Universal Studios Hollywood different from Disneyland?
Universal Studios Hollywood and Disneyland offer very different experiences. Universal combines movie and television themes, thrill rides, the Studio Tour, and immersive lands such as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.
Disneyland may be a better fit for families whose priorities center on classic Disney characters, attractions, and traditions, while Universal may be especially appealing to families interested in movies, franchises, thrill rides, and behind-the-scenes experiences.
Universal Studios Hollywood is also much more compact than a Walt Disney World vacation. You are planning around one theme park rather than multiple Disney theme parks.
Neither trip needs to look exactly like another family’s vacation. We can help you compare the experiences based on your children’s ages, interests, and the kind of trip you want.
🎬 What are the main areas and attractions at Universal Hollywood?
Universal Studios Hollywood includes attractions and experiences across the Upper Lot and Lower Lot, along with the World-Famous Studio Tour.
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
- SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
- Jurassic World – The Ride
- Revenge of the Mummy
- TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D
- Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
- The Simpsons Ride
- The World-Famous Studio Tour
- Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift
Attractions, entertainment, operating hours, and offerings can change. We recommend checking the official Universal website for current details before your visit.
🏎️ What is Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift?
Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift officially opened on September 16, 2026. It is Universal Studios Hollywood’s first high-speed outdoor roller coaster and features a high-energy ride experience inspired by the Fast & Furious franchise.
The attraction includes launches, high speeds, and drifting-style movement. Height requirements and operational details should be confirmed with Universal before your visit.
🪄 Is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter the same as Orlando?
Not exactly. Universal Studios Hollywood has The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, but the experience is smaller than what you will find at Universal Orlando Resort.
Hollywood does not have Diagon Alley. If your family is specifically hoping to experience Diagon Alley, that is part of the Universal Orlando experience rather than Universal Studios Hollywood.
Hogsmeade in Hollywood can still be a wonderful experience for Harry Potter fans, especially if you enjoy the atmosphere, shops, food, characters, and attractions.
🍄 What is SUPER NINTENDO WORLD?
SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is one of the most immersive areas at Universal Studios Hollywood, bringing the world of Nintendo into the park with themed environments, interactive elements, food, shopping, and attractions.
For families with Nintendo fans, this can easily become one of the biggest priorities of the day.
Early Access may be available as an additional option depending on the current offering. It is separate from regular park admission, and availability and terms can change.
📅 How many days do we need at Universal Studios Hollywood?
Many families can experience a lot with one full park day, but the right amount of time depends on your priorities, travel season, crowd levels, ticket options, and whether you want to take your time.
One day may work well for a focused visit. An additional day or a slower schedule may make more sense if you want to experience many attractions, explore SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, enjoy the Studio Tour, shop, or travel with younger children.
🏨 Where should we stay near Universal Studios Hollywood?
We have personally stayed at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City, which is approximately 0.3 miles from Universal Studios Hollywood. We have also sent clients there.
Staying close to Universal can be convenient for families. Room type, total cost, transportation, amenities, family needs, and the rest of your itinerary all matter.
We can compare nearby hotels like the Sheraton Universal Hotel which is also about 0.3 miles from Universal Studios Hollywood and help you decide whether staying close to Universal, staying elsewhere in Los Angeles, or combining multiple destinations makes the most sense.
✈️ Should we fly from LAS to Burbank or drive from Las Vegas?
If you are traveling from Las Vegas, you can fly from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) into Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), or drive to Southern California.
Flying from LAS to BUR
Potential advantages
- Can save time compared with driving, depending on your schedule.
- Burbank is convenient to Universal Studios Hollywood.
- May work well for a short theme park getaway.
- Can be useful when combining Universal with Los Angeles sightseeing.
Potential disadvantages
- Flight schedules and nonstop availability can change.
- You must account for airport arrival, security, and baggage time.
- Ground transportation and luggage costs add to the total.
- You have less flexibility than when driving.
Driving from Las Vegas
Potential advantages
- More flexibility with departure times and stops.
- Convenient for extra luggage or young children.
- You have your own vehicle during the trip.
- May work well when visiting several Southern California destinations.
Potential disadvantages
- Traffic and road conditions can affect travel time.
- The drive can be tiring, especially with children.
- You must consider fuel and theme park parking.
- Driving home after a full park day may not be ideal.
✈️ LAX vs. Burbank Airport: Which should we choose?
Both airports can work for a Universal Studios Hollywood vacation, but they offer different experiences.
Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR)
Potential advantages
- Generally more convenient to Universal Studios Hollywood.
- May offer a simpler airport experience.
- Can reduce the time between the airport and your hotel.
- A practical option for a Universal-focused trip.
- We have personally flown into Burbank.
Potential disadvantages
- Flight options may be more limited.
- Airfare may not always be the lowest.
- Schedules and baggage policies need to be compared.
- Ground transportation is still required.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Potential advantages
- Often provides a broader range of flight options.
- May offer more airline and departure-time choices.
- Can work well when combining Universal with other Los Angeles destinations.
- May provide more options for comparing airfare.
Potential disadvantages
- It is farther from Universal than Burbank.
- Traffic can make the drive unpredictable.
- The airport experience may require additional time.
- Transportation costs and travel time may be higher.
🛒 Do we need a stroller?
If you are traveling with babies or toddlers, we recommend seriously considering a stroller. Park days can include substantial walking, standing, and waiting.
Even children who usually walk everywhere may appreciate a stroller during a long day. Confirm current stroller size and park policies before your visit.
There is one very important Universal Hollywood consideration: getting down to the Lower Lot with a stroller is not as simple as walking down a normal path.
The Lower Lot requires navigating multiple escalators. The elevator does not take you the entire way down, and at the remaining portion of the route you may need to fold the stroller and use the available transportation to complete the journey.
If you have a child who is sleeping in the stroller, this can make getting down to the Lower Lot particularly difficult. You may need to wake the child and fold the stroller to continue.
📏 What if our children are too short for some attractions?
Height requirements can significantly affect your itinerary. Check the current requirements for your must-do attractions before building your day around them.
Universal also offers child-switch procedures for eligible attractions, which can help families when some members want to ride and younger children cannot.
⚡ Should we buy Universal Express?
Universal Express can be helpful if reducing waits and experiencing more attractions are major priorities. It is an additional expense, so it does not automatically make sense for every family.
Potential advantages
- Can reduce waits at eligible attractions.
- May help families with limited time.
- Can provide additional flexibility during busy visits.
- May be useful when you have a long must-do list.
Potential disadvantages
- It increases the total trip cost.
- It does not eliminate every wait or guarantee that every attraction will be available.
- It may not be necessary for families with a slower or more selective plan.
- The value depends on dates, crowd levels, and your priorities.
👑 Should we consider the VIP Experience?
A VIP Experience may be worth considering if you want a more guided experience, additional convenience, and help maximizing your park time.
Potential advantages
- More structured guidance throughout the visit.
- Can be useful for guests who want to prioritize major attractions.
- May include special access or benefits depending on the current offering.
- Can reduce the amount of planning you need to manage yourself.
Potential disadvantages
- It comes at a significant additional cost.
- It may be more than some families need.
- The experience may not be the best fit for families wanting a slower, flexible day.
We recommend reviewing the current inclusions, schedule, group size, and terms before booking.
📸 Is Universal’s photography package worth it?
Universal offers photography options that can be convenient for families who want professional-looking vacation photos without asking a family member to take every picture.
Potential advantages
- You can get the whole family in more of your vacation photos.
- It can be convenient if you do not want to carry or manage your own camera.
- Photos taken throughout the day can help capture moments you might otherwise miss.
- It can be especially useful for milestone trips, birthdays, or larger family groups.
Potential disadvantages
- It is an additional expense.
- Not every family takes enough photos to make the package worthwhile.
- Photo locations, photographers, inclusions, and package terms can change.
- You may already have a good phone or camera and prefer taking your own pictures.
🎥 Is the Studio Tour worth doing?
The World-Famous Studio Tour is one of the experiences that makes Universal Studios Hollywood different from many other theme parks. It offers guests a look at working-studio history, sets, and themed experiences.
Allow time for the tour when building your schedule, and check the current operating details before your visit.
The Studio Tour may be especially appealing to families who enjoy movies, television, behind-the-scenes experiences, or simply want to experience something that is unique to Universal Hollywood.
🍽️ Should we buy a Universal Dining Pass?
Universal offers a Dining Pass option that can make sense for some families, especially if you know you will be eating several times throughout the day. The pass includes 2 entrées and 4 snacks per person, which can be a convenient way to plan meals and snacks without purchasing each item separately.
Before adding it, we recommend looking at the participating restaurants and what your family would realistically order during your park day. Depending on your eating habits, paying for meals individually may make more sense.
🎃 What about Halloween and the holiday season?
We have personally visited Universal Studios Hollywood during the holiday season with our girls when they were babies and toddlers. Seasonal visits can be incredibly memorable, but they may also involve different crowds, entertainment, weather, and operating schedules.
Halloween Horror Nights is a separately ticketed nighttime event with content and atmosphere that may not be appropriate for every child. Daytime park admission and nighttime event admission should be planned separately.
Holiday offerings can also change from year to year, so check the current seasonal entertainment and dates for your trip.
🎖️ Are there military options at Universal Studios Hollywood?
Eligible military members and their families may have access to special Universal Studios Hollywood offers or military pricing depending on the current program, eligibility requirements, dates, and participating locations.
Military offers can have specific rules regarding who qualifies, how tickets must be purchased or activated, and which dates or products are included.
Travis is a Navy veteran, and military travel resources are something we are very familiar with. If you are an active-duty military family, veteran, retiree, or military-connected traveler, tell us before purchasing your tickets so we can help you look at the options that apply to your situation.
🌴 Can we add Los Angeles tours or sightseeing?
Absolutely. Universal Studios Hollywood can be combined with optional Los Angeles sightseeing, depending on your family’s interests and available time.
Possible additions may include studio-related experiences, city sightseeing, beaches, museums, shopping, or other attractions.
We will consider travel time, traffic, children’s ages, and whether your family wants a full schedule or more breathing room.
🏰 Can we combine Universal Studios Hollywood with Disneyland?
Yes. Many families combine Universal Studios Hollywood with Disneyland, especially when they want to experience multiple Southern California theme park destinations.
The best order depends on your hotel locations, transportation, trip length, park priorities, and how much time you want between major park days.
We can help plan the two destinations as one itinerary instead of treating them as separate vacations.
🚢 Can we combine Universal Hollywood with a cruise?
Yes. Universal Studios Hollywood can be combined with a cruise departing from the Los Angeles area, including sailings from ports such as San Pedro or Long Beach depending on the itinerary.
We recommend considering transportation, hotel location, luggage, and cruise departure time together.
Whenever possible, we recommend arriving in the cruise departure area at least one day before sailing rather than trying to connect directly from a theme park day or flight on the morning of departure.
🛡️ Should we add travel protection?
We recommend considering travel protection when you have prepaid flights, hotels, tickets, transfers, or other arrangements.
Coverage varies by plan and may include certain covered cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical situations, or other unexpected events.
Review the actual policy, exclusions, eligibility requirements, and covered reasons before purchasing.
💵 How much should we budget?
The total cost depends on your tickets, hotel, transportation, food, upgrades, special experiences, and travel dates.
- Flights or driving costs
- Hotel
- Theme park admission
- Universal Express
- VIP Experience
- Early Admission to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
- Dining and snacks
- Parking or airport transportation
- Travel protection
- Photography or other optional experiences
- Souvenirs and optional sightseeing
We prefer to compare the total vacation cost instead of focusing on only one line item.
📘 Do you have a more detailed planning guide?
Yes. Our Universal Studios Hollywood Know Before You Go Guide is 30 pages and is designed to help you understand the planning details before your trip.
It covers many of the practical questions families have before visiting, so you can spend less time trying to piece together information from dozens of different sources.
We can also help you decide what needs to be booked, what should be researched, and what can remain flexible.
📅 When should we start planning Universal Studios Hollywood?
It depends on your travel dates, hotel preferences, airfare, ticket needs, special experiences, and whether you are combining Universal with Disneyland, a cruise, or other Southern California destinations.
We recommend starting earlier when your trip includes multiple hotels, flights, a cruise, special experiences, or a larger family or group.
Starting early also gives you more time to understand your options rather than making decisions quickly because your travel date is approaching.
